President's Newsletter - October

Dear Fellow Member,

Our #SWIbacktogether week was a resounding success with many Institutes around Scotland meeting up for the first time since March, 2020. The Rural Rambles have also been well supported.

Our online talks were attended by large numbers of members and friends and I hope that many ladies, having seen what we do, will join our great organisation. Most of the talks are available on our YouTube channel, “WomensInstitutesTV” and have attracted much attention.

I am pleased to welcome our Membership Engagement officer, Julie Colman, who took up post on 21st September and has great ideas for meetings, talks and also recruitment.

Julie’s email is and she will be pleased to hear from you.

Our CEO, Raymond Pratt, retires on 30th November. Raymond has given guidance and support to the OBs and the organisation for 9 years and I would like to record my thanks to him for this.

I am delighted to announce that Diane Cooper will take up the CEO role from 1st December.

Diane has many ideas to increase membership of the SWI and feels that the post Covid recovery is an important time to publicise the organisation when social meetings are again possible.

The Outdoor Bowling competition was held at Strathaven Bowling Club on 13th September. The winning team were Stewartry 1, runners up were Dumfriesshire Federation. An enjoyable day was had by the teams and spectators.

We have a stand at Creative Crafts at the SEC from 14th – 17th October where members will give demonstrations.

The Matter of Opinion competition and the Quiz will be held on Saturday, 30th October on Zoom. This is not the same as meeting together but does provide an entertaining day.

The Anstruther Gray Drama competition for a Radio Play will be held on Saturday, 6th November, also on Zoom.

In association with Hamlyns, we are running a competition for a Christmas biscuit competition. Send your recipe and a photograph to Handcrafts & Homeskills Events Co-ordinator, Pamela Black, before Monday 15 November. Email or post to Christmas biscuit competition, The SWI, 42 Heriot Row, Edinburgh, EH3 6ES.

I hope that you are enjoying being able to have meetings and that they will continue through the Winter.

Take care and stay safe.
