Outstanding Member of the Year - 2026

The SWI was delighted to name Alice Meston of Catterline SWI, Kincardineshire, as its Outstanding Member of the Year 2026. Alice attended the Members’ Gathering in person, where she received the award from SWI National President Susie Finlayson.
The award recognises the huge contribution members like Alice make to their communities, and she is a wonderful example of everything that makes the SWI special. Her full nomination can be read below:
“Alice Meston is the heart of our institute. She is someone who gives her time, energy, and kindness without ever expecting recognition in return. Her dedication has helped keep our institute thriving, while ensuring every member feels valued, included, and supported. Alice works tirelessly behind the scenes to keep everyone informed and connected.
She makes sure members know what is happening, keeps communication flowing, and checks in with people individually. Whether someone has attended for years or is walking through the door for the first time, Alice makes them feel genuinely welcome. She knows our members personally, takes an interest in their lives, and creates an environment where everyone feels safe, respected, and included.
One of Alice’s greatest achievements has been her determination to protect the future of our institute. At a time when many organisations face declining membership, she has fought to keep our institute going. She has worked hard to attract younger members while continuing to value those who have supported the institute for many years. This balance has helped create a vibrant, multi-generational group where friendships flourish and traditions continue.
Alice leads by example. She is always willing to step forward, organise events, encourage participation, and support others. She never asks someone to do something she wouldn’t do herself. Her enthusiasm is infectious, inspiring members to get involved and give back to the institute.
What makes Alice truly exceptional is the atmosphere she creates. She has built a welcoming community where everyone feels they belong. New members quickly become part of the group because of the warmth and encouragement she shows them. Existing members know they have someone they can rely on, whether they need practical help, a listening ear, or simply a friendly smile.
The impact Alice has had extends far beyond organising meetings or activities. She has strengthened friendships, encouraged confidence in others, and helped create lasting memories for countless members. Her commitment has ensured that our institute is not just somewhere people attend each month, but somewhere they genuinely look forward to visiting.
Alice embodies everything this award represents: dedication, compassion, leadership, and community spirit. Her selfless commitment has made a lasting difference to our institute and to the lives of so many members. She is an inspiration to us all, and there could not be a more deserving recipient of the Outstanding Member Award.”
