We couldn’t do it without you

Imagine exploring the untold stories of Scottish women who have been shaping rural life for more than a century. The SWI Heritage Project is all about recording those irreplaceable stories. Think of it as a chance to connect with your roots, learn about the women who paved the way, and pass on wisdom to the next generation.
A team of volunteers, led by a small SWI Heritage Project team – fully funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund – work the SWI Heritage Project Group to drive the project to its completion in late 2026.
Made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players.

Here’s how volunteers are making it happen
Uncovering hidden histories
Volunteers are digitising old documents illustrating the rise of the largest women’s movement in Scotland, photographs of Scotland’s women through the years, and even royal letters, making them accessible to everyone. The collection inspires our volunteers, members, students, and historians who actively preserve both the items and their stories.
Remote volunteers are archiving past issues of Home and Country magazine, completing this important preservation work from their homes
Sharing skills and traditions
Volunteers are teaching traditional crafts such as knitting and straw work to younger women, keeping these skills alive.
Capturing women’s voices
We are recording the memories of SWI members, preserving their experiences and unique perspectives on rural life and how the role of women in Scotland’s communities has developed over the years.
Offering inclusive access
Volunteers with computing knowledge help digitally excluded people access information, while a team of members designed and rigorously tested the website before launch
Community helpers
Volunteers within the SWI and beyond are needed to lead the effort. The SWI is partnering with Volunteer Scotland to promote volunteering opportunities throughout the project.
