Heritage helpers

Imagine exploring the untold stories of Scottish women who have been shaping rural life for more than a century. The SWI Heritage Project is all about recording those irreplaceable stories. Think of it as a chance to connect with your roots, learn about the women who paved the way, and pass on wisdom to the next generation.

A team of volunteers, led by a small SWI Heritage Project team – fully funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund – work the SWI Heritage Project Group to drive the project to its completion in late 2026.

Made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players.

Uncovering hidden histories

Volunteers are digitising old documents illustrating the rise of the largest women’s movement in Scotland, photographs of Scotland’s women through the years, and even royal letters, making them accessible to everyone. Our volunteers – members, students and historians – are inspired the treasure trove of items and are working to preserve them and the stories they tell.

Remote volunteers are currently engaged in archiving past issues of Home and Country magazine, completing this important preservation work from the comfort of their own homes.

Sharing skills and traditions

Volunteers are teaching traditional crafts such as knitting and straw work to younger women, keeping these skills alive.

Capturing women’s voices

We are recording the memories of SWI members, preserving their experiences and unique perspectives on rural life and how the role of women in Scotland’s communities has developed over the years.

Offering inclusive access

Some volunteers with computing knowledge are helping those who are digitally excluded, ensuring everyone can access the information, and the website has been created in consultation with a team of members and rigorously tested prior to launch.

Community helpers

Volunteers within the SWI and beyond are needed to lead the effort. The SWI is partnering with Volunteer Scotland to promote volunteering opportunities throughout the project.
